HEALTHY EATING
Healthy Eating today has become a minefield of conflicting information that leaves the best of us confused and unsure of how and what we should be eating. So many different diet types and ways we should be eating. What to eat? What not to eat? Demonizing certain food groups, such as cutting out all carbohydrates or all fats. It is no wonder the average person just has no idea now how or what they should be eating.
Eating disorders and disordered eating is certainly on the increase. Anorexia, Bulimia, Orthorexia are affecting younger and younger people. The internet and social media although such wonderful tools can be responsible for exasperating these issues. Constant comparison of our bodies to others we see on social media. Constantly being bombarded with ‘clean eating’ images and messages. These disorders can cause us a variety of health problems for both men and women. Affecting our reproductive system, bone density, our hormones, our mood, our energy levels and so much more.
Today having a healthy relationship with food is an important part of our life and can help give us a good quality of life in so many ways. But what does healthy mean these days? For me healthy eating means becoming comfortable with food, enjoying food, eating foods that nourish our bodies and provide fuel for our lifestyles. Not demonizing any one food group, eating all major food groups, Proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Eating the rainbow in fruits and vegetables but also not depriving ourselves of that piece of cake if that is what you fancy.
We must remember no one food is bad for you and no one food is going to ruin your ‘healthy eating’. Its all about balance and moderation on both sides of the scale. If your healthy eating is controlling your lifestyle, social situations and causing you anxiety perhaps it is time to have a re-think.
We are not defined by how we look or what we eat. Its time to celebrate our health and our bodies.
